CANTON – Learn about The 1918 Flu Pandemic when retired nursing instructor Fran Van Horne speaks at the Brown Bag Lunch at noon, Thursday, March 17 at the St. Lawrence County Historical Association’s Silas Wright House, 3 East Main St.

The 1918 Flu Pandemic killed about 30 million people worldwide, including 675,000 people in the United States. It left many more than that widowed or orphaned, and many communities declared quarantines, closing establishments where people gathered, including bars and saloons. There was a run on alcohol in some places, as it was thought alcohol could keep you from getting the flu.

Could this type of wide scale pandemic and death toll happen again? What about the 2009-2010 H1N1 Flu Pandemic, known by many as Swine Flu, and how did it relate to the 1918 pandemic? Van Horne will provide answers to these and other questions. Bring your lunch to the program and enjoy a free beverage and dessert provided by SLCHA.

The St. Lawrence County Historical Association at the Silas Wright House is open Tuesday through Saturday noon to 4 p.m., Friday noon to 8 p.m.
