The unemployment rate in St. Lawrence County in May dropped half a point from April and is slightly improved from a year ago, according to figures released today by the New York State Department of Labor.
The rate reported for May in the county was 9.9 percent, down from 10.4 percent in April and better than the 10 percent reported in May 2010.
St. Lawrence County still has the highest unemployment rate among upstate counties.
To our east in Franklin County, the unemployment rate for May was 8.5 percent, down from 9.2 percent in April and slightly better than the 8.7 percent figure in May last year.
In Jefferson County, to our west, May's rate stood at 9 percent, down a full point form 10 percent in April, but up from the May 2010 rate of 8.7 percent.
These figures are not adjusted for seasonal variation.
For comparison, the rate across the state is calculated at 7.8 percent for May, up from 7.6 percent in April, but down from the 8.3 percent rate reported in May 2010; and the rate for the U.S. as a whole stayed at 8.7 percent, as it was in April, down from the 9.3 percent reported in May 2010.
