St. Lawrence County’s official unemployment rate for September, 6.8 percent, was down one whole percent from August, when it stood at 7.8 percent.
According to the latest figures from the state Department of Labor, this September’s count was down 1.4 percent in a year, when the jobless rate was 8.2 percent.
But the number of people working, at 43,500 in September, was actually down from a year ago, when the DOL counted 44,400 people with jobs.
And the raw number of unemployed was also down, from 4,000 in the county a year ago to 3,200 this September.
To our west in Jefferson County, the unemployment rate dropped slightly from August – 6.9 percent – to September, at 6.6 percent.
To our east in Franklin County, the jobless rate dropped four-tenths of a percent, from 6.8 percent in August to 6.4 percent in September.
The DOL notes that these figures are not adjusted to reflect seasonal variations, and are subject to revision.
