Unemployment rate drops in St. Lawrence County, but remains among highest in state

Although St. Lawrence County’s unemployment rate fell in September from the same month last year, it continues to have one of the highest unemployment rates in New York.

The rate in September was 5.9 percent, down from 6.6 percent in September 2014. There were 45,100 people working and 2,800 people on the dole. That compares to 44,600 people working and 3,200 people getting benefits last year, the state Department of Labor said.

To our east in Franklin County, the unemployment rate dropped to 5.9 percent last month from 6.3 percent in September 2014.

There were 19,200 people employed last month and 1,200 receiving unemployment benefits. In September 2014, 19,200 people were working and 1,300 were on the dole, according to the DOL.

To our west in Jefferson County, The rate fell to 5.8 percent last month down from 6.4 percent in September year ago.

There were 43,400 people working in August and 2,700 on unemployment. In September 2014, 43,400 people had jobs and 3,000 people received benefits, the DOL said.

The numbers reported are not seasonally adjusted, according to the DOL.
