The February unemployment rate in St. Lawrence County was down substantially from January's count, to 11.4 percent compared with 12.1 percent, a drop of seven-tenths of a point in one month.
The February 2011 tally was down slightly from February a year ago, when it stood at 11.5 percent, according to New York State Department of Labor statistics.
In comparison, the county immediately to the east, Franklin, saw a drop from January, at 10.2 percent, to 10 percent in February. That is also down from the 10.3 percent recorded in February 2010.
To the west, in Jefferson County, the rate dropped slightly, from 11.8 percent in January to 11.7 percent in February. It is up from February 2010, when the rate stood at 11.4 percent.
Those figures have not been adjusted for seasonal variations.
New York State's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 8.2% in February 2011, unchanged from January.
Outside of New York City, the state rate dropped slightly in February, to 7.7 percent from 7.8 percent in January.
