The unemployment rate in St. Lawrence County in December stood at 10.5 percent, up from 10.2 percent in November and from the 9.9 percent posted in December 2009, according to figures released today by the New York State Department of Labor.
In Jefferson County to our west, December's rate was 10.4 percent, up significantly from the 9.8 percent figure for November and the 9.4 percent rate of December 2009.
To our east, the unemployment rate in Franklin County in December was up to 9.1 percent from the 8.9 percent rate in November and the 8.8 percent rate in December 2009.
Oswego County's December rate of 11.1 percent is the highest among all Upstate counties, a distinction that St. Lawrence County had for several months before this report. Only The Bronx, a New York City borough, had a higher rate for December, at 12.0 percent, but that is a decline from 12.3 percent in November and 13.9 percent in December 2009.
The figure for the entire state was 8.0 percent in December, 8.1 percent in November, and 9.7 percent in December 2009. And for all 50 states, the rate stood at 9.1 percent in December, 9.3 percent in November, and 9.7 percent in December 2009.
