GOUVERNEUR -- Heidi Putnam, Team Blevins Office Manager and Wellness Champion, decided to plant a garden as part of their worksite wellness program, a Healthy Small Business Project of the St. Lawrence Health Initiative.
She made the decision to plant the garden next to the business in Gouverneur because “I like gardening and thought it would be helpful and create a sense of community at Team Blevins.”
One employee donated use of his tiller, one took the time to till the area, and Putnam planted the seeds and plants. She asked for plant suggestion from the whole staff using a new wellness bulletin board at work. Tomatoes, onions, zucchini, snap peas and cucumbers will be offered at their weekly staff barbecue, while pumpkins and beets will be available for employees to take home.
The Healthy Small Business Project is promoting installation of worksite gardens, use of farmers’ markets, and memberships of a CSA (community supported agriculture) farm as ways to increase consumption of fruits and vegetables and taking a step toward a healthier life.
