SUNY Potsdam tops food services rankings among North Country colleges

SUNY Potsdam’s PACES Dining Services ranked 39th and St. Lawrence University food service ranked 90th out of 1,175 colleges surveyed in a survey of the best campuses for food by Niche.com

The colleges were ranked based on meal plan cost and more than 470,000 opinions from 64,000 students.

A high ranking indicates the college offers a variety of healthy, quality food options that accommodate various dietary preferences and that the students are happy with the quality of campus food.

Clarkson University was not ranked among the best, but has a grade of B- for its food, according to Niche.

SUNY Canton received neither a ranking nor a grade from Niche for its on-campus food.

Meanwhile, a team of St. Lawrence University cooks won a silver medal in the American Culinary Federation Culinary Conference and Competition in Saratoga Springs earlier this month.

The Niche “best campus food” ranking is an assessment of the quality of the campus dining at traditional four-year colleges and universities in the United States. It uses data from the Department of Education and 471,506 opinion-based survey responses about campus food from 64,113 current students and recent alumni.

A high ranking in generally indicates that students are very happy with the quality of campus food; the meal plan costs are reasonable; dining services offers a variety of healthy, quality food options and accommodates various dietary preferences and allergies; dining services operates during hours convenient for students, including offering late-night food options, according to Niche.

At the time of calculation, Niche’s database contained records for 2,245 public and private, traditional four-year colleges and universities across the United States. For the purposes of their ranking, a “traditional” college is considered to be any accredited, non-profit post-secondary institution that primarily offers four-year degree programs (as opposed to two-year or less). The final ranking results in 1,342 colleges receiving a grade, with 1,175 of those also receiving a numerical ranking.

SUNY Potsdam’s PACES Dining Service was rated number one in the SUNY System in the Student Opinion Satisfaction Survey.
