St. Lawrence County unemployment dropped slightly last month; still above state and national rates

The March unemployment rate for St. Lawrence County has dropped slightly compared to this time last year, reported the state Labor Department in a press release Tuesday.

Unemployment in March was 6.9 percent, down from March 2016 when it was recorded at 7.3.

The DOL reports that there were 40,100 employed people in the county last month. A year ago that number was slightly higher at 41,100, but the loss is attributed to a decline in the number of people in the workforce, not the number of employable workers without jobs.

March 2017 saw a total of 3,000 unemployed in the county, compared to 3,300 in March 2016.

St. Lawrence County’s 6.9 percent rate compares with neighboring Jefferson County at 7.1 percent, Franklin County at 6.5 percent and Lewis County at 8.2 percent.

The state's overall unemployment rate for March 2017 was 4.3 percent. The national percentage was 4.5 in March.
