St. Lawrence County lost 300 jobs in August, unemployment second highest in state

St. Lawrence County lost 300 jobs in August and the unemployment rate rose to the second highest in the state that month, according to the Department of Labor.

The DOL says the county jobless rate was at 6.5 percent, up from 6.3 percent the same month last year. The number of people receiving unemployment benefits remained flat at 2,700, but there were 39,200 jobs in August 2017, down from 39,500 the same month last year.

To the east in Franklin County, the unemployment rate rose from 5 percent in August 2016 to 5.3 percent last month. The total number of unemployed people rose to 1,100 from 1,000 in that same time frame. The total number of employed people decreased from 19,100 in August 2016 to 18,900 last month, according to DOL.

To the west in Jefferson County, the rate rose to 5.4 percent last month from 5.3 percent in August 2016. They had 2,600 people receiving benefits last month, up from 2,500 the same month last year. They lost jobs in the same time period, with 44,500 people working last month and 44,700 the same month last year, DOL said.
