The percentage of St. Lawrence County residents receiving unemployment benefits in December fell nearly a full percentage point from the same month a year ago, but the number of people working also dropped, according to the state Department of Labor.
The Dec. 2014 rate was 7.2 percent, or roughly 3,300 people. This compares to 8.1 percent, or 3,800 people, in Dec. 2013, according to the DOL.
There were 42,700 people working in the county in December, compared to 43,600 a year ago.
To our east in Franklin County, the rate dropped from 8 percent in Dec. 2013 to 6.9 percent in Dec. 2014. There were 19,200 employed and 1,400 unemployed in Dec. 2014. The same month a year ago saw 19,800 people with jobs and 1,700 receiving unemployment insurance.
To our west in Jefferson County, the unemployment rate fell from 9.1 percent in Dec. 2013 to 7.7 percent the same month a year later. There were 42,200 people working in Dec. 2013 and 4,200 on unemployment. In Dec. 2014, there were 41,200 working and 3,400 receiving unemployment benefits.
