POTSDAM -- Over 250 business associates gathered at SUNY Potsdam recently to celebrate a fifty-year history of the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce’s work in economic development and recognize three outstanding businesses.

The night was filled with networking and camaraderie, while also addressing the hardship the county faces and the importance of businesses, communities and support agencies working together to continue innovative and important work.

The Business of the Year award was given to Michael Scriminger of Canton, owner and producer of Fourth Coast Entertainment, a free monthly publication and website covering events and features in a 150 mile radius of Canton.

The Customer Service Excellence award recognized Mort Backus & Sons of Ogdensburg, a sixty-year old family owned and operated Buick & Chevrolet dealership.

The Local Producer of the Year Award, new this year, was given to River Myst Winery owners Randy and Denise LaMay, from Lisbon who are expanding their operation and were involved in the development of the St. Lawrence County Wine Trail.

Chamber director Brooke Rouse pointed out key partnerships in the last year with the SLC Industrial Development Agency, SUNY Canton SBDC, Adirondack North Country Association, the North Country Regional Economic Development Council and several independent businesses and communities, which amounted to new projects and opportunities for businesses.

Rouse also mentioned accomplishments for membership and businesses in the last year, including a new webinar training series, hosting of three trade shows and seven networking events, and financial assistance to five businesses through the Chamber’s revolving loan fund.

Tourism highlights included the launch of a new website, work with the St. Lawrence International Film Festival and St. Lawrence Wine Trail to introduce the world to St. Lawrence County, and a grant execution for fishing promotion across the greater North Country, GoFishNY.com.
