SLU warns merchants of possible t-shirt scam

CANTON -- St. Lawrence University is warning merchants of a possible t-shirt scam that has hit other towns.

St. Lawrence officials have forwarded a message from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa. about the scam:

“The great t-shirt scam has hit Dickinson College and is likely coming to a college town near you. It hits you before you ever know it. This group contacts local businesses and says it is working with your college.

“The business buys an ad on the t-shirt, which is supposedly being given to all first-year students. The company then delivers a couple boxes of super cheap t-shirts to athletics.

“The shirts don't have your name or logo on it. It has business names on the back, and some odd saying on the front. We only figured it out when these shirts showed up. You might want to give notice to your local newspapers just in case these folks hit local high schools or others as a public service to local business owners who could be out hundreds of dollars in a still tough economy.”
