SeaComm awards 'Eagles' scholarships to 8 graduating high school seniors

SeaComm Federal Credit Union recently awarded eight students with the Shirley J. Eagles Memorial Scholarships.

Congratulations to Andrew Perry of Dickinson; Michaela Toomey from Potsdam; Brian Ashline of Burke; Malone residents Amanda Gokey and Jenna Johnston; Jon Prashaw of Norfolk; Corey Snider from Massena, and Adrian Martin of North Bangor.

Each student received a $500 scholarship.

Andrew Perry, son of Stephen Perry and Tina Andrews-Perry, achieved a 96.6 grade point average while being home schooled. He is also the recipient of the WNYCA Scholarship. During his high school career he taught clogging classes and volunteered at several dance revues benefiting the local YMCA. Andrew has been accepted into North Country Community College where he will be studying land surveillance.

Michaela Toomey, daughter of Michael and Mary Jane Toomey, completed her high school career at Parishville-Hopkinton Central School with a grade point average of 96. Michaela was a member of the National Honor Society, and was awarded Certification of Academic Excellence and the Gold President's Education Award throughout her four years. A recipient of the Dean's Excellence Scholarship, she will be attending Paul Smith's College in the fall studying forestry and land surveillance.

Brian Ashline, son of Anthony and Diane Ashline, graduated from Chateaugay Central School with a grade point average of 92.5. He was able to maintain third position of his class while taking many college credit courses along with his higher level high school courses and was awarded Adirondack Scholar. Brian was President of the Musical Theatre Group, Vice President of the high school band and captain of the varsity baseball team. Acceptedinto Clarkson University, he will be studying mechanical engineering.

Amanda Gokey, daughter of Steve and Marsha Gokey, finished her high school career at Franklin Academy in Malone with a grade point average of 88.83. A member of Epsilon Honors Society, Amanda took part in honors classes, advanced placement and college level courses. She was involved in the Rotary Interact Club, played women's softball and was crowned Franklin County Dairy Princess 2009-2010. Being accepted to Houghton College in the fall, Amanda will be studying Mathematics Secondary Education.

Jenna Johnston, daughter of James and Sandra Johnston graduated from Franklin Academy with a grade point average of 96.8. A member of Epsilon Honors Society and National Honor Society, she was named Valedictorian of her class. She plays an active role in her community as a member of the Westville Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, by volunteering at the local animal shelter and having worked at several Red Cross Blood Drives. A recipient of the SUNY Potsdam Freshman Scholar Award, she will be attending college there in the fall studying art education.

Jon Prashaw, son of Joseph and Karen Prashaw concluded his high school career at Massena Central School with a grade point average of 96. Beyond the rigorous courses completed, Jon participated in three varsity level sports and gave back to his local community whenever possible. Working for the Salvation Army, raising money for needy families in Nicaragua or working at the Annual Rotary Pancake Breakfast, he has a strong belief in giving back to a community. Accepted to Hobart College in the fall, he will be studying biology.

Corey Snider, son of JoAnn Snider, graduated from Massena Central High School with a grade point average of 97.2. Valedictorian of his class, he is the recipient of the HOBY Scholarship, Adirondack Scholars Award, Clarkson Scholarship, the Holcroft Alumni Recognition Award and the Peterson Endowed Scholarship. Corey also participated in the soccer and track teams. Being accepted into Clarkson University, he will be studying engineering and management.

Adrian Martin, son of Steve and Debbie Martin is a graduate of Brushton-Moira Central High School, were he finished with a grade point average of 95. He was President of the Boys Varsity and JV Basketball Committee, and served as captain to the varsity basketball team that made it to the Elite 8 game for states. Recipient of the NYSCOPBA Scholarship and the Academic Excellence Award, Adrian has been accepted to St. Lawrence University where he will be studying biology.

SeaComm Shirley J. Eagles scholarships are awarded each year to eight college bound students in memory of long time SeaComm employee Shirley Eagles, who lost her life in a tragic car accident in 2004. Winners are selected based on a wide variety of criteria including academics, volunteer service, scholastic awards, and financial need.
