The St. Lawrence Health Initiative is highlighting local restaurants offering healthier options on their menus through their participation in the Creating Healthy Places Smart Picks Restaurant Project.

The restaurants aim to increase customer awareness of the healthy menu items already offered and expand options to include more healthy entrees, side dishes, and children’s menu items, according to Health Initiative representatives.

Fish Bone Café in Hammond features new entrée salads and a new children’s menu with smaller portion sizes.

Smuggler’s Café in Ogdensburg has added several new healthy sandwiches and salads, such as a veggie melt panini, an avocado veggie wrap and an avocado salad.

Smuggler's Cafe owners Maureen Pinkerton & Bill Hosmer.

Both restaurants worked hard to adapt their menus and are eager for patrons to try out their new items.

Other local restaurants participating in Smart Picks are Foxy Roxy’s Diner and Cheryl’s Diner in Potsdam, Jumbo’s Diner in Gouverneur, and Cascade Inn in Canton.

Foxy Roxy’s Diner has had new options on the menu for many months while Cheryl’s, Jumbo’s and Cascade Inn are in the beginning stages of the project and are developing new menu options now.
