CANTON -- A public hearing regarding a proposed law that would raise the age to sale to 21 will be held at 7 p.m. tonight, June 5, at the St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators chambers.
The proposal would restrict sale of tobacco products and e-cigarettes to anyone under 21 years of age. The law does not include penalties for smokers, nor would it restrict those under 21 from selling the products.
The resoluton was brought forward by legislator John Burke, R-Norfolk, but has faced opposition from County Chair Kevin Acres, R-Madrid, who says the proposed law is “government overreach.”
The resolution would allow the director of public health to recommend a penalty minimum of $300, but not to exceed $1,000 for the first offense of selling tobacco to someone under age 21.
Second offenses would increase to a range of $500 to $1,500.
At a recent meeting Ogdensburg officials unanimously refused to support the resolution.
The recommendation would be made by the county administrator, upon conferral with the county attorney.
