Potsdam Lions Club looks to raise $5,000 for Literacy is For Everyone and Snack Pack Program through radio fundraiser

POTSDAM -- The Potsdam Lions Club has partnered with WSNN and WPDM radio stations for the 15th annual Radio Weeks Community Fundraiser.

This year, the Lions are supporting Literacy is For Everyone (LIFE) and the Snack Pack Program. Their goal of $5,000 will be equally divided between LIFE and the Snack Pack program.

LIFE is a literacy education tutoring program assisting adults with reading and writing skills, ESL and recently, internet training, which is a branch service of the Potsdam Public Library, with Maria Morrison as its Director.

LIFE was created out a great need to continue literacy training in our area to 40 individuals working with tutors, when the Literacy Volunteers organization terminated its services here. Funds are needed for LIFE to purchase various types of student literacy education materials and to provide director leadership.

The Snack Pack Program is a weekend nutritional supplement provision for children who are eligible for free or reduced lunch programs in the Potsdam Central School District. Children are also helped with several nutritional snacks when school is out on break.

The program was established last November 2016, by Lion Laurell Brault, who serves as its director, with co-sponsors, New Hope Community Church and the Potsdam Lions Club.

The program, initially helping 40 children with added nutrition, became successful with strong community support, and has expanded to now serve 116 students with nutritional food supplements.

There are more than 80 students still needing assistance, and we call on the Potsdam Community to help once again. Funds are needed to purchase nutritious snack items, as well as packaging supplies.

The staff at WSNN and WPDM Radio will provide courtesy radio advertising spots for all businesses donating to these causes. The radio advertising spots will be aired for two weeks, June 5-17 on B99.3 FM- 80's Hits, STAR 100.1-Country, simulcasted with 1470 AM. For a $60 donation, a business will receive two 15 second radio spots, and for a $100 donation, a business will receive four 15 second radio spots.

Individuals may also donate to these causes. To donate, contact Amanda Prescott at 315-262-7376 or Michelle Theisen at 315-742-2172.

The Radio Weeks Community Fundraiser will be seeking donations through April to the week of May 2, 2017.

In 2016, the Radio Weeks Community Fundraiser donations totaled $4,100, which was raised for the Potsdam Rescue Squad, to assist them to purchase a new emergency rescue heart monitor.
