POTSDAM -- Hematologist and medical oncologist Velmalia Matthews-Smith has joined Canton-Potsdam Hospital’s medical staff, according to St. Lawrence Health System.
Matthews-Smith specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer using chemotherapy and other medically based interventions. She began seeing patients March 9. In addition, she will lead and coordinate patient care and follow up with the Center for Cancer Care’s comprehensive team of physicians, clinicians, and administrative staff.
She will focus her practice on cancers of the lung, colon, breast and prostate, along with blood diseases.
She is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, is a member of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Medical Association. She received her medical degree from the University of South Alabama, and her fellowship training at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Matthews Smith recently worked at the Baptist Cancer Institute in Columbus, Ms.
