Ogdensburg's Lockwood Center getting new bleachers just in time for hockey season

OGDENSBURG -- Spectators at the Richard G. Lockwood Civic Center will have a much more comfortable place to watch hockey this winter thanks to the Lowe’s Heroes Program.

Employees from the Ogdensburg Lowe’s store have been working with Ogdensburg Parks & Recreation Department employees this week to build wooden bleachers on the mezzanine at the Lockwood Arena.

The wooden bleachers will replace two smaller metal bleachers that have been moved to youth athletic fields to provide more seating there, according to Ogdensburg Parks & Recreation Director Matthew J. Curatolo.

The wooden bleachers are 60 foot long and 15 feet wide. They go up 10 feet in the air with four risers for people to sit. All of the materials, supplies including wood as well as labor were provided for by the Lowe’s Heroes Program which works on a large project each year in the Ogdensburg community.

“We really appreciate Lowe’s help and support for this project which has been on my radar for over five years now. Through their generosity, we were able to make this happen which really benefits our spectators here at the arena,” said Curatolo.

The metal bleachers that were previously on the mezzanine were rarely used because they were too small and really cold during the winter months. The bleacher project is one of several that have been completed at the Lockwood Arena over the years including a new scorebox and trophy case that the department built with the help of Ogdensburg Minor Hockey and wooden lockers purchased and installed by the Oldtimers Hockey League.

The completion of the bleacher project is perfect timing, according to Curatolo, with Parks & Recreation staff preparing to lay down ice for the upcoming winter season on Monday. The tentative first day of ice rentals will be Oct. 8.
