OGDENSBURG – The Greater Ogdensburg Chamber of Commerce has announced its Business Improvement Award for 2011 goes to Phoenix on the Bay, the Outstanding Community Service Award goes to the Roethel Family and Glory Martel has been named the 2011 Citizen of the Year.

The recipients will be honored at the chamber’s Annual Dinner Friday, Nov. 4 at the Gran-View Restaurant.

For more information or to make a reservation for the dinner, call 393-3620 or email chamber@gisco.net.

Phoenix on the Bay owner Kevin Manke has taken the area’s greatest asset, the St. Lawrence River, and has showcased it with renovations to his restaurant over the past several years.

He put in an outdoor patio so that patrons could have a meal and sit outside with an amazing view of the river.

This spring he renovated his entire inside space offering fabulous river views from every seat in the house.

As we all continue to try and develop and promote the river, Phoenix on the Bay has taken a giant step forward by creating an example for all and an asset to our business community.

The Roethel family has been part of the fabric of Ogdensburg for many decades.

From the days of the Roethel’s Ogdensburg Business School and the Roethel’s Executives Drum & Bugle Corp to their present businesses all based in Ogdensburg, their loyalty to our community is surely evident.

As a family they have been ardent supporters of the Seaway Festival since its inception and each of the family is active in several service and civic organizations.

With the recent relighting of the Lighthouse, the Roethel family has given Ogdensburg back one of its best treasures.

For over 40 years, Glory has dedicated herself 100 percent when asked to volunteer.

Just some of her civic commitments include serving on the Ogdensburg Tree Commission and the Cemetery Committee, founding the Red Hat Society, the Madhatters, of which she is the Queen Mother, holding the office of treasurer of the Seaway Cruisers Car Club, and chairing for the second year in a row the Remington Gala Committee.

She is a lifetime member of the Ogdensburg Garden Club where she served as president and works with the Youth Garden Club.

She is an active member of TAUNY and just recently hosted an open house at her home CobbleHill Farm where she has also hosted the Holiday House tour several times.

She donated funding to the Ambulatory Surgical Unit at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center which provided a changing room in honor of her late husband Carl Martel.
