NBT Bank, which has branches in Canton, Potsdam, Massena, Norfolk, and Ogdensburg, is offering “Strive” financial education programs for youth and young adults in April, although none are planned in St. Lawrence County.

NBT spokesperson Elizabeth Nagy says they are planning some in the area.

April is what the bank calls “Financial Literacy Month,” a movement recognized nationwide to help educate the greater population on how to improve or establish money management skills. While taking charge of personal finances should be a top priority year-round, Financial Literacy Month is an opportunity to learn new tips and reignite motivation to work toward financial goals.

This year, NBT Bank and Money Management International offer a 30-step path to help anyone achieve financial wellness during Financial Literacy Month. A few steps include:

Use the Financial Literacy Month online assessment tool at http://www.financialliteracymonth.com/30steps/ to assess one’s current financial situation.

Clear out financial clutter. Know what to keep and what to toss when going through old receipts, paystubs, bills, tax documents and other financial papers. But before taking out the trash, be sure that all identifying information has been destroyed to avoid personal information falling into the wrong hands.

Get copies of credit reports. The FACT Act gives every consumer the right to a free credit report every year from each of the three major credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. To get a free report, visit www.annualcreditreport.com.

Take the debt test. Freedom from debt is an achievable goal for every family. The first step in regaining control is to take an honest look at your existing obligations. Take the “Financial Literacy Month” debt test to determine if one needs a plan for payoff.

Document your spending. Record fixed, variable, and periodic expenses in the “Financial Literacy Month” expense worksheet. This tool will then help to identify expenses that can be reduced and prevent impulse spending.
