Much of the job growth in the North Country this year is expected to be in low-wage jobs, except for relatively well paid registered nurses, according to the state Department of Labor.
The labor department says the following jobs (and their annual median wage) are likely to see greater than normal growth through the end of 2015 in the region:
• Personal care aides ($23,250)
• Cashiers ($18,930)
• Childcare worker ($18,120)
• Retail salespersons ($21,990)
• Registered nurses ($63,380)
According to the 2014 federal Department of Health and Human Services, the federal poverty line for a family of two is $15,730.
DOL says the North Country Region’s top five trending jobs for 2015 selected by labor market analysts are based on occupational survey data and the projected needs of their region.
"Statewide, we’re seeing tremendous growth in many areas, especially in the technology and health care fields,” said Acting State Labor Commissioner Mario J. Musolino.
Job seekers can improve their job search skills and learn about training for trending jobs at the St. Lawrence Career Centers, at 35 Glenn St. Massena and at 1020 Park St., Ogdensburg. or St. Lawrence County’s One-Stop Career Center, 80 State Rt. 310, Suite 8, Canton.
The DOL also suggests people take advantage of the Jobs Express website (www.jobs.ny.gov), which has tens of thousands of jobs available that can be sorted by region and occupation, and allows users to search jobs based on zip code and travel distance.
There is no fee to use the site for job seekers or businesses. In fact, by listing open positions on Jobs Express, businesses can save up to $6,000 per year, according to DOL. Businesses interested in listing their jobs should visit: www.labor.ny.gov/hire.
