More than $1 million in support for a North Country-based sustainability project has come from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) through the 2014 Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) awards.

NYSERDA provided a Cleaner, Greener Communities award to the North Country Cleaner, Greener Communities One-Stop Shop project at Adirondack North Country Association, which will provide technical, financial and implementation support for sustainability projects in seven North Country counties including St. Lawrence.

Projects include Energy Circuit Riders, energy and finance options, a database of local qualified contractors and suppliers and identification of buildings with the highest potential for energy-related savings.

The 14 projects funded include six wood pellet biomass heating installations; the first small scale food waste biodigester in the nation; solar thermal heating systems on four greenhouses that will allow year round farming; two main street revitalization projects that will enhance community vitality; and one hydro upgrade that will help generate more local electricity from a municipal dam.

The Cleaner, Greener Communities program also will help build market capacity to encourage communities to engage in sustainability strategies without the need for ongoing support.

Cleaner, Greener Communities is providing $30 million statewide during this round of funding and is a component of the $709.2 million in CFA projects announced by Governor Cuomo on Dec. 11.

The North Country regional Economic Council’s projects were awarded $1,044,390 as part of total project cost of $1,419,558.
