MASSENA -- Massena’s airport Richards Field is getting $39,273 from the U.S. Department of Transportation for security equipment.

The funds will be used to purchase and install closed circuit cameras for monitoring building interiors and exteriors of the airport terminal grounds, passenger loading areas and aviation areas.

Funds will also go toward software upgrades to improve secure doors and gates to buildings and restricted areas on airport grounds, runways and taxiways, according to the funding announcement from Rep. Bill Owens.

“Running a regional community airport can be costly and these grants do a great deal to save local taxpayers some money,” said Massena Town Supervisor Joseph Gray. “This security upgrade also ensures that passengers flying into and out of Massena will have even less to worry about regarding security. The town of Massena appreciates this federal support.”

“Security equipment is essential for operating regional airports like this one” said Owens. “Investing in this equipment ensures the long-term viability of the facility and allows it to continue providing a safe travel option for visitors, residents and businesspeople in the region.”

Richards Field is a public airport covering 752 acres and has a 5,600 foot asphalt runway.
