Massena Town Council to take public comment on proposal to restrict transient sales

MASSENA -- The Town Council will hold an April 15 public hearing for a proposed local law placing a six-month moratorium on transient sales, according to Supervisor Joseph D. Gray.

It is likely the board will take action on the proposal after the public is allowed to have input.

The moratorium is part of a two-prong effort to update the town’s code book on visiting salespeople and companies, according to Gray.

“The Town Council, working with Town Attorney Eric Gustafson and the chairmen of the Planning Board and the Zoning Board of Appeals, has been drafting on a new local law to address the continued presence of transient sales people, which is not adequately addressed in existing laws,” he said.

“This moratorium will give everyone a chance to take a step back, look at the big picture and do what is right for our community. We want to be fair to vendors who wish to come to Massena to sell their merchandise, while at the same ensuring a clear understanding of how the process works and what impact it might have on existing permanent businesses.”

The hearing will precede the regularly scheduled monthly board meeting.
