CANTON -- The Cornell Cooperative Extension Learning Farm, 2043B State Highway 68, will host a Wool Pool in its Agronomy Lab from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 22.
Sheep producers will be able to bring their wool to the farm, where it will be marketed to the Canadian Cooperative Wool Growers in Ontario.
Wool is weighed and loaded onto a truck to be transported to Canada.
After transport, the wool will be graded fleece by fleece and producers can expect a check early next year.
All wool is evaluated for length, strength, cleanliness and color.
White wool with no black hairs is the most valuable due its versatility for processing and dying, while colored wool is not as valuable in the commercial production arena.
Skirted wool, which has had the dirty edges and fleece removed, is generally more valuable than dirty wool.
Producers wishing to bring wool to the pool can register at 379-9192, ext. 227 or Betsy Hodge at bmf9@cornell.edu.
