MASSENA -- Local contractors can receive lead-safe work practice certification for free through a workshop Dec. 7 in Massena.
It is sponsored by the Development Authority of the North Country (DANC) and the Village of Massena.
The eight-hour course will include lead issue awareness, safe work practices, and how to mitigate lead contamination in construction projects.
The training will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 7 in Room 30 of the Village of Massena offices, 60 Main St. Pre-registration is required and seating is limited. To register, email mtaylor@danc.org, or call Matt Taylor at 315-661-3200.
DANC is working with the Village of Massena to improve its affordable housing stock. As part of this effort, the village has received funding for housing rehabilitation projects. The type of work involved is determined on a case-by-case basis, but typically includes roof and window replacement or upgrades to plumbing, heating or electrical systems. Contractors working on these projects must meet certain qualifications, including Lead-Safe Certification.
DANC, in partnership with the New York State Office of Housing and Community Renewal, is sponsoring the free training to help contractors qualify for these opportunities. Normally the lead certification training costs $200 per person.
The goal, according to a press release from DANC, is to build a pool of qualified local contractors that can work on the Massena housing rehabilitation projects. Similar training has been successfully offered in other communities to enable contractors to work on housing rehabilitation projects. Contractors do not have to be from Massena to participate. Both supervisors and workers are encouraged to participate.
