Gouverneur-based Kinney Drugs donates $19k to American Heart Association's 'Go Red for Women' campaign

Kinney Drugs, a local, employee-owned chain of drug stores that serves communities in Gouverneur, Ogdensburg, Massena, Canton and Potsdam, presented the American Heart Association with $19,273.88 in support of the “Go Red For Women” movement.

Kinney Drugs raised the money during its month-long heart-health initiative at each of its 100 locations. The money will be used by the American Heart Association to support communities throughout New York and Vermont that are served by Kinney Drugs.

“We take pride in our partnership with the American Heart Association. It helps Kinney Drugs build awareness about the dangers of heart disease and it gives us the opportunity to provide resources for both our customers and employees on how to improve their heart health,” said Jim Spencer, president of Kinney Drugs stores. “We want to thank all of our customers, employees and vendors who came together to support heart health in our communities.”

The American Heart Association's “Go Red For Women” movement was created by women, for women. It increases awareness of heart disease among women and encourages action to save more lives. The movement harnesses the energy, passion and power women have to band together and collectively wipe out heart disease. It challenges them to know their risk for heart disease and take action to reduce personal risk. It also gives them the tools they need to lead a heart-healthy life.

In support of the movement, Kinney Drugs’ heart-health initiative was designed to build awareness of heart disease, educate customers on the risks and help raise money for the cause. The company raised nearly $10,000 through customer donations. Customers who donated received a Go Red wristband, a symbol of the “Go Red For Women” movement. In addition, Kinney Drugs and its vendor partner Mayer Bros. each donated 25 cents for every Kinney Drugs 16.9-ounce water bottle sold during the month. The company also received funds through vendor contributions and an employee fundraiser.

Representatives from the American Heart Association and Kinney Drugs, as well as members from the local community, were present for the check presentation in Manlius. The presentation was followed by a heart-healthy themed reception.
