MASSENA -- The area has lost a well-known local restaurateur and businessman.

Edgar “Eddy” Leo Hebert, who founded Hebert’s Steak Ranch, is dead at age 80.

He died on Jan. 19 at his home with his family at his side, according to his obituary.

He founded Hebert’s Steak Ranch, still operating today on state Route 37 in Massena.

In addition to that, he with his brother Laurent also founded CoCo’s Steakhouse in Cornwall.

In addition to slinging steaks, he managed Cornwall’s Cornwallis Hotel and was deeply involved in sports.

Hebert also was a professional boxer and was co-owner of the former Cornwall Royals hockey team.

In addition to boxing and hockey, Hebert was an avid pool player, a winner of many trophies, awards and tournaments.

Among his survivors is his wife, Betty, who he met when she managed and sang at CoCo’s.

Memorial services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Phillips Memorial Home, Massena. A celebration of life will follow at Hebert’s.
