Cargo traffic on the St. Lawrence Seaway was up nearly 5 percent through September over the same period last year.
The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation reports that 24,431 metric tons traveled the Seaway from its opening in March through the end of September, 1,155 more metric tons of cargo than last year through September.
Grain shipments are up nearly 70 percent – 6,757 metric tons this year, 3,982 tons last year – while iron ore is down about 27 percent – 4,768 tons this year, 6,564 last year.
Vessels transiting the Seaway are up slightly, from 2,526 transits last year through September to 2,549 this year, up .91 percent.
