Canton's Church and Community Program appoints new director

CANTON -- The board of directors at Canton's Church and Community Program have appointed Edwards resident Catherine Mathews as their new director, to start Monday, June 20.

Mathews served in the Peace Corps in Korea for many years, then returned to the States where she worked in a variety of human services.

Since moving to Edwards in 1986, Mathews has worked with returning veterans and assisted in local food pantries.

The board's announcement said that her immediate goal as director is to learn more about the work of the Church and Community Program, and consider additional ways to help residents in crisis situations.

The previous director, Shari Wilcox of Potsdam, was dismissed in April after 17 years in the post. She said at the time that a board representative only told her they wanted to move in a new direction with a new director.

The Church and Community Program, established by Canton area churches in 1974, assists residents with emergency food, clothing and other needs. During the past 37 years generous support from many volunteers has helped the program to grow, helping to provide eligible families with such items as warm winter clothing and September school supplies. They also coordinate a large Christmas Bureau project, distributing food baskets, toys and clothing during the holidays.

The office, a food pantry and a large thrift shop are on the third floor at 95 Main St.
