CANTON -- The Canton Village Board voted unanimously Monday night to appoint Leigh Bixby Rodriguez to be the village’s new director of economic development.

“The Village of Canton has found an outstanding professional who will work with us to move the Village forward in partnership with the Town, and who will help us realize the business potential of our community,” said Mayor Mary Ann Ashley in a press release.

Canton’s new economic developer is no stranger to the North Country business community.

Rodriguez, who lives in Canton, holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of New Hampshire, and works now for the St. Lawrence County Industrial Development Agency as a business development specialist. Before joining the IDA she was business services coordinator for the St. Lawrence County Office of Economic Development. Rodriguez also holds a certificate in paralegal studies and has 20 years of professional experience in economic development, business, and legal affairs.

“I am familiar with the programs and services available to businesses in St. Lawrence County and have had extensive contact with the business community, lenders, local, regional, state and federal agencies,” said Rodriguez. “I interact regularly with corporate and business leaders, entrepreneurs, economic development partners, and elected officials, and I am excited to represent Canton to these constituents.”

“This Village Board sees economic development as key to the future of Canton,” said Trustee Carol Pynchon, who chaired the candidate search for the position. “We are committed to working with the Town in continuing to provide quality economic and community development to ensure Canton’s vitality and growth, and we think Leigh is uniquely qualified to lead us in those efforts.”

Rodriguez starts on Jan. 15.
