HANNAWA FALLS – The Canoe Place Inn, on the Raquette River at 5726 State Rt. 56, has opened.

Two local couples, Jason and Teressa Rutkauskas and Kayce and Jeff Stone, have opened the restaurant and party venue and have already taken reservations for weddings and parties at the spot formerly known as the Shorelounge, the Shoreline, and other names.

“My wife is a fabulous baker,” said Jason Rutkauskas, explaining that the seed of the idea to open the restaurant was planted when she and Kayc Stone “began talking about a place to do something” to take advantage of their talents.

“I’m a big guy, and I like food,” Rutkauskas said, plus he had experience running a bar in Bangor, Maine, so the idea was not foreign to the 1995 Potsdam High School graduate.

The open hours will be 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. with food such as pasta, steaks and seafood, along with soft drinks, and, once their liquor license comes through, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every day.

They also plan food deliveries within about a five-mile radius once they have their grand opening, which will be after they get the liquor license.

They plan on 10 full- and part-time workers.

“The food is 99 percent home made,” Rutkauskas said.

He is proud of the fact that several pasta sauces are available, and none are made in advance, but are made to order on the spot.

Another favorite feature is the water access and a large outdoor seating area.

The telephone number at the Canoe Place Inn is 265-5600.
