POTSDAM -- A new music store is opening this month, run by two former employees of Northern Music and Video.
Brick & Mortar Music will have a “soft” opening Jan. 15 at 15 Market St.
“We want to fill the void” left by the demise of Northern Music, said Jeremy Carney who, with his wife, Allison Carney, were long-time employees at Northern.
Carney said it will be a “full-line music store, with instruments, accessories, sheet music, rentals, repair,” all with the goal of serving “students and teachers with goods and services,” one of the main occupations of Northern Music, where he ran the school music program.
They will be selling, renting and maintaining the gamut of school band and orchestra instruments including string, brass, woodwinds and percussion instruments, plus acoustic and electric guitars, basses, drums and keyboards.
Their emphasis will not be electronics, which was one of Northern Music’s mainstays.
“The primary focus is schools – teachers and students,” Carney said. “Allison and I worked hard the last few years” building relationships, and they believe “teachers need service especially, in rural areas, to have success. We’ll focus on our strength and go from there,” providing a “bricks and mortar” presence that people will know they can just walk into and shop.
“We’re starting from scratch to make a comfortable place for everyone to come and enjoy.”
“We want to support community needs and make sure people have a bricks and mortar store to come to,” Allison Carney said.
They also have a start on a web site at www.bandmm.com.
Store hours will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.
The phone number is 274-9311.
The Carneys plan to hire two more people to work with them.
