POTSDAM – Over 200 people joined the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce in celebrating the business community and three annual awards at the Nov. 8 annual dinner held at SUNY Potsdam.

St. Lawrence County Chamber President Scott Goldie welcomed the crowd by sharing a personal story of his pleasure shopping at awardee Bicknell Appliance and Home Interiors recently.

He stressed that, “We need everyone to recognize that where they spend their money is a choice. And the best way to acknowledge the importance of our local businesses, is to purchase our goods and services from those based here in St. Lawrence County. For it is the local business owners that employ our neighbors, pay local taxes, financially support our local charities, and serve on the boards of local organizations. Supporting our local businesses is the best way we can protect the unique character of our County.”

Nancy Arquiett and Brittany Murtagh, owners of 2 Mama Birds, accept the Local Producer of the Year Award from SLC Chamber Director Brooke Rouse.

Executive Director, Brooke Rouse pointed out 2017 accomplishments and plans for 2018 in her ‘state of the chamber’ speech, which included an official launch of the new destination brand for the County. She commended the St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators for their support in connecting occupancy tax revenue to tourism funding, and detailed an upcoming effort to recruit conferences and the launch of a trails website as tourism highlights.

Rouse noted that current activities will continue, focusing on building a strong county-wide business network and providing sales and marketing opportunities for members. A ‘Kids EXPO’, for-profit grant writing workshop, and management training series are all on the horizon as initiatives for 2018.

The highlight of the night was the presentation of annual awards. The Business of the Year award, recognizing a business that has contributed to the growth of the St. Lawrence County economy and brings pride to the business community, was being awarded to United Helpers this year.

The Customer Service Excellence award was presented to Bicknell Appliance and Home Interiors of Potsdam as a chamber business that has provided extraordinary service in their delivery of product and/or service to their customers.

The Local Producer of the Year honored 2 Mama Birds of Massena. This award is for a chamber producer that has developed their capacity for creating and selling a product that is handmade, locally sourced or value added, raising awareness and pride for local products.
