Awareness of housing discrimination in St. Lawrence County benefits from North Country Savings Bank contribution

CANTON -- This spring, North Country Savings Bank made a $245 contribution to the St. Lawrence County Fair Housing Task Force to help promote awareness that housing discrimination is illegal when renting, financing or selling a home.

Each year the County Board of Legislators proclaims April as Fair Housing Month to commemorate the passage of the Federal Fair Housing Act.

With the contribution from North Country Savings, the Fair Housing Task Force purchased promotional materials that were given to the public at three events throughout the county. Those events were the Boys and Girls Club Expo in Ogdensburg on March 24 and 25; the Home and Garden Show at Cheel Arena in Potsdam; and the Extravaganza in Massena on May 6.

Members of the Task Force and partnering agencies including the County Board of Realtors, the North Country Housing Council, and Maximizing Independent Living Choices staffed booths at each event and provided information to the public about what housing discrimination may look like, who is protected under the law; and who to contact if you’ve experienced housing discrimination.
