Spencer Thew, founder of Atlantic Testing gave the keynote address at the Clarkson dinner.

POTSDAM -- Nearly 100 people gathered for the Clarkson University Reh Center for Entrepreneurship’s second annual Entrepreneur Recognition dinner on campus April 27. The event recognized six individuals for their commitment to and support of entrepreneurship.

Spencer Thew, founder of Atlantic Testing and proprietor of Call of the Wild and Club Rocky Top B&B in South Colton, delivered the keynote address, on creating and executing effective plans.

Thew, who competed in the 1993 Iditarod sled dog race from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska, told the audience that while preparing your plan, picture your end goal -- for him, “Think Nome” -- but advised when executing the plan, “Forget Nome and get to the first checkpoint.”

Timothy Gardner received the Entrepreneur of the Year award for turning his coffee roasting hobby into a $100,000-a-year business, St. Lawrence Valley Roasters. Gardner was one of the first small business owners to take the Reh Center’s My Small Business 101 course and has also utilized student interns in the development of his business plans.

Dale Rice, director of the SUNY Canton Small Business Development Center, received the Entrepreneur’s Hero Award. Under his leadership, the Small Business Development Center has worked directly with 4,559 businesses, helping them to invest $63,146,871 in the area’s economy, and created or saved 1,491 jobs.

Susan E. Powers, professor in sustainable environmental systems and associate director for sustainability at Clarkson, was awarded the Spirit of Entrepreneurship Award. Powers’ efforts led to the development of the Sprout Foundation Loan Fund for Student Start-Ups in Green Innovation, a revolving loan fund for student-inspired and student-run start-ups that address issues and challenges associated with a sustainable environment.

Alumni David Reh ‘62, founder of Raytec Inc., Victor, and Robert Kerr ‘89, co-founder of Swish Data, Warwick, were inducted into the Clarkson Alumni Entrepreneur Hall of Fame in recognition of their entrepreneurial achievements.
