MASSENA -- Alcoa will keep its Massena west smelter open for at least three-and-a-half more years and maintain at least 600 jobs in exchange for a multi-million dollar corporate welfare package from New York state, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Sen. Charles Schumer announced in Massena Tuesday.
The aluminum giant will receive $30 million from the New York Power Authority in power discounts and $38.8 million from the state.
There is a $40 million penalty the company will incur if they go below 600 jobs before March 20, 2019, Cuomo said.
Schumer said the deal does not include a provision where Alcoa will modernize its shuttered east plant smelter, which was part of their original deal struck two years ago.
More will be added to this story later.
